Antonin Kratochvil

Mieres, Asturias 01 - 04 february 2007

Documentary and the Portrait. This workshops is part of the Jornadas Internacional de Fotoperiodismo organized by the Asociación Profesional de Fotoperiodistas Asturianos. With the town of Mieres and it's inhabitants as subject matter, Antonin Kratochvil's workshop is designed to help students hone their photographic skills and technique and also to take an in-depth look on how best to execute a visual idea. In learning to convert images that exist in the mind into a comprehensive photo-essay, Kratochvil will direct students in ways of structuring their work to carry a clear and compelling message combing the document and the portrait.   From start to finish, participants will be asked to delve deeply into their methods and intent, arriving at a conclusion that reflects their thesis or original idea. The anatomy of the photo-essay will be thoroughly dissected. In addition, Kratochvil will discuss the problems of working in foreign, and sometimes hostile, environments where taking pictures can become decidedly difficult if not periodically dangerous.   In short, a photographer's reputation doesn't merely exist in his images.   How he gets them is equally as important.    Through a career spanning over 35 years, Kratochvil will offer an inexhaustible supply of information, criticism and fresh ideas on what the ever-changing editorial world demands and expects. The workshop will be divided between classroom sessions in the morning and photographing in the afternoons.  Kratochvil asks that each student bring a portfolio of previous work to the workshop.
